Rear end bracing
« on: May 12, 2008 - 02:24:32 PM »
I just began tearing down the rear of my car in earnest & have a question. I have run into plenty of shoddy previous bodywork & it was hiding......yes you guessed it rust.  :eek4: I have removed the driver side quarter & Im wondering at what point should I start bracing things or applying new panels to ensure everything lines up when re-assembled? From the looks of things its going to be both quarters, trunk pan, & dutchman panel.  :walkaway:

It has been recommended to me that doing the dutchman panel first is best. I gives you a good reference point to aim back to when you add do the quarters. Look through the posts. You will fins a lot of suggestions on the topic.

 :iagree:

My recommendation is that if you need trunk floors too to do them at the same time as you do the dutchman. Cut the dutchman about a quarter inch on the inside before each seam. Then drill out the spot welds with a spot weld cutter. Then use a wonder bar to gently leverage the lip off where they meet. Once the dutchman is cut off the sides, you can push it up a little to get the spot welds easier where they meet the window area. Once you get the new dutchman in place you have a few choices on how you want to do the quarter panels. Either a complete skin replacement or the entire quarter panel. Do one side at a time I suggest.
