Need Advice on Rear End
« on: May 21, 2008 - 08:51:03 AM »
I currently have an open 2.76 8.75" rear end in my car and I'm looking for advice on how to upgrade.  I'd like to end up with a 3.23 limited slip and would probably lean toward aftermarket as opposed to buying an old 8.75, although that's not cast in stone.  Any thoughts?

If you're state side Dr. Diff has good pricing on total axle ass'ys, or you can get just the diff from him I believe in the area of $1050 US . Strange Engineering and Randy's  were more $$  the last i checked. I put an Auburn diff with 3:55 gears in my Cuda/340/4 gear.......works well so far........dk

I'll check those out, thanks.  As for the trans, I have a 904 and will probably swap it for a SB 727, or is there a later model 4-speed auto I should consider?

Thanks, I think the Gear Vendors 727 with OD is the way I'm going to go.

If I just want to keep the rear end simple and go to a 3.55 posi (and I understand that the 741 case is the "weakest" of the 8-3/4s), do I need anything other than this?

I wouldn't go with a 741 housing. For that price you can get a 489 or 742.

 :iagree:

Take your time (if you can) and look around....I found a whole 3rd member at a swap meet (741, 3.23, posi, clutch style) for $175.00...I just took the posi out of it and slapped it in my 489 case with 3.91's.  Total cost was around $600; that includes the 3rd member, richmond 3.91 gears, seals, bearings, etc.

A few companies sell complete rear units for that much and less.  Check out manciniracing.com or the parts for sale board here and at moparts.com.  I'd be concerned as the picture in teh auction doesn't show a pinion yoke installed.  :dunno:
