'64 Valiant (273) Headers
« on: May 27, 2008 - 12:19:42 AM »
I just started to restore my '64 Valiant that I picked up last month.  We pulled the 273 out, cleaned it up, painted it and now we are starting to add all of the bells and whistles, but I'm having a heck of a time finding headers that are fairly reasonable in price.  They all seem to be in the $500-$700 range, and I'm finding that sorta hard to swallow.

Isn't there anybody out there that makes headers for my car in the $300 or less price range?  If I have to... I'm going to pay whatever it takes, but Mama isn't going to be happy. :grinno:

I think there is a company called spitfire that makes some, but I couldn't tell you how much they are.
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

Really spending the $6-700 will save you money , by the time you hve to dent the headers to fit them , replace gaskets because the flange warps & will not seal & then burn a few sets of spark plug wires @ $80 / set it really is worth the extra $$
I really recommend TTi for fit & quality

Yeah, my buddy recommended TTI as well, and I think that's probably what we're going to go with.

I appreciate the input.  Thanks.

You have TTIs, Dougs, or Spitfires.

TTIs are the most complete.  PITA to install, but they are the most complete long tube header.

Doug's are the original.  There's one (or 2, can't remember, been awhile since I had my early A info) slip fits.  Definitely pricy, and don't require AS much work as the TTIs to put in, but still a PITA

Spitfires.  Well there's a hit or miss brand.  I've ordered 2 sets of these, and got them on time as promised.  Many others not so lucky.  $175 for the sets 4 years ago.  Layson's sell these also for $400 a set?  either way, what you save up front, you'll pay with a coating and welding on your own down tubes.  Drivers side will be a PITA to fabricate.

I'd go with TTIs as well.  Sure as heck more $$$ up front, but probably the best choice of the 3 major brands.
