I've had my cat for almost 9 years.  She is great, loving and social, however, she doesn't like kids.  She tolerates my little girl, who knows she isn't supposed to go near her.  There is an understanding there.  My wife has been taking care of my niece who is the same age as my daughter and the cat absolutely hates her.  This morning she attacked her, bit her and knocked her down the stairs.  My niece is ok, but that was the last straw for the cat.  Unfortunately, because of her age no shelter will take her.  The only option is to have her put down, which I don't want to do, but we cannot have her in our house anymore.  Is there anybody in the Austin, Texas area willing to accept her into their homes?  She makes a great pet as long as you are not younger than the age of 12.  She is declawed and is current on her shots.  She has been an indoor cat all her life.

My daughter is 3 1/2, my niece is 3.  My kid weighs about 35 pounds, her cousin comes in at about 40.  The cat tips the scales at about 15 pounds, but I don't think it was the actual cat knocking her down, but rather the reaction the kid had to the cat coming at her.  She lost her balance and fell, it just so happens she was on the stairs when she fell.
