Why parts are failing with todays oils article
« on: June 10, 2008 - 10:33:28 AM »
Here is a link I found that explains a lot about today's oils.
http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engine/flat_tappet_cam_tech/index.html
It may belong in the engine section but it also talks about suppliers.

There has been many discussions on the ZDDP  issue on other car forums as this affects all older vehicles.  This is the first time I've seen something written about the lifter issues which is interesting.  The discussions were just second hand before.  You can either research to find out what oils have sufficient ZDDP levels and buy some of the boutique oils (which seem to be mostly synthetic) or go to a hydraulic roller cam like I did to avoid poor quality lifters and the downside of the new oils.  Now I just run cheap Walmart oils like Quaker State. :)

Definately an interesting read. Also try Bob is the Oil Guy http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php forum. Lots of  :drama: but some good info if you dig.

After reading a few different things like this  it seems that the easiest off the shelf remedy is to use Castrol GTX and a bottle of STP red. An other option is to add a bottle of GM engine oil supplement to the oil of your choice.

There is always the roller cam solution as well.
