Need Help-are they parts worth anything
« on: June 04, 2008 - 10:08:24 PM »
Hi all,

Need some help from the parts pro's out there.  I had the engine rebuilt on my 1974 cuda 360 4-speed.  The engine builder recommended that I purchase new edelbrock aluminum heads (which I did).  He told me that the original iron heads had these tiny nearly invisible cracks (I could barely even see the cracks with the special white dust that he had spread over the heads).  He had the heads x-rayed, and that it would be more cost effective to purchase the new edelbrock heads.  My engine builder is a trust-worthy guy; I have no reason to doubt his opinion.

Any ways, my question is whether the old heads have any value or not?  If so, how much?  And if the cylinder heads are useless, should they be tossed out in the trash, or is it worth hauling them to a metal recycler?

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Oh I would definitely think that they would be worth something, if they're repairable.  But I'm far from a parts pro...   :roflsmiley:

If the heads are 360 heads then I would use them for parts. It would be cheaper to just get a another set than it would be to repair these. If they were a 340 head that you just had to have because of a casting number it would still probably be cheaper to replace them. The only reason I can see for repairing the heads would be if they were 340 T/A heads. That is my opinion. Others may disagree. 360 heads are plentiful.

My local recycler is paying 11 to 12 cents a pound for cast iron. As far as scrapping the heads that would depend on how close your normal travels bring you to the recycler. With the high cost of gas just taking the heads over may not be worth it.  I junk a pick up bed full of engine blocks and parts at once to make it worth my run.
