Well, I just figured out why my moms chally convert had no blower motor. The wire was not hooked up for it but I ended up removing the whole heater box anyway to test it outside of the car. When I went to remove the heater box, the box was duct taped (yes I said duct taped) with black colored duct tape to the defroster vent duct work. I chose not to install the temporary fix and left it off. What would have originally connected these two pieces of duct work together? Are they still available repro'd? Does anyone have one to sell to help me out?

Hey Brian,

Not sure which heater box you have, A/C or non A/C. Here is a picture of a non A/C duct. Is that what is broken on yours?

The heater box is a NON A/C unit. The defroster duct is exactly like the one you have shown but we are missing what seems to be a piece that connects the defroster duct to the main part of the heater box.

Hey Brian,

There is no piece missing. It butts over the exhaust port of the heater box.

If it isn't lining up, I wonder if you have an A/C defroster duct trying to connect to a non A/C heater box?

The factory used black sticky duct tape on them with a foam on the otherside. That is what was on my pieces

Is it supposed to be right on top of each other or is there supposed to be some type of air gap. I wonder if there is some kind of adjustment that lets the parts fit flush together. I will try to take a picture of it today if I have a chance. If not today, then over the weekend as tomorrow I have a training class for my PD job.

I want to say that I have a bit of a gap. But I'll take a couple of pics tonight and see what it looks like. I didn't really do more than clean mine up and reinstall them.

Barry,

I see the nut and the 4 screws that hold it in. There is still a gap about the thickness of my pinky nail and the defroster duct goes over to the driver side more than the heater box but it is alligned up with the pass. side part. I will have to try and get a picture for everyone on Sat.

On my '73 non-A/C there was no tape and a gap of up to about 1/2" between the heater box & defrost dust. This had never been removed until I did a couple of years ago.

I have seen a foam gasket with sticky backed tape holding it in place between the two but it is usually dust after 40 years , fo rthe most part the seal was nothing special & they simply depended on heat rising up the defrost duct , I would put a strip of foam inside the heater duct hanging down 1/4 " or os to help seal it

Yup, that is exactly what ours looks like as well. I guess ours is missing nothing then. (finally, a break)
