Hard acceleration shifter twisting
« on: September 19, 2022 - 04:17:03 AM »
Hi,

I don't know how to really describe my issue...

I have a 1970 Challenger stock 383 with 4-speed that recently got 2.76 instead of 3.55 gears in the rear. Nice and comfortable driving on our highways.
But since then when hitting it in 1st harder than normal the whole shifter/trans is twisting to the rigth. Holding the shifter it feels like it pulls about 10cm to the right and you really have a hard time to find 2nd.

So just want to make sure this is "normal" due to changed gears, or do I have to worry something was forgotten during change... Some kind of mounting whatever... Did not make it myself.

Thanks for feedback :)

Have not been on this site for a long time. No one is chiming in so I will. Check for a broken motor mount on the drivers side. It will look good just sitting there but if you put a jack with a block of wood under the oil pan and lift the engine a bit you will see if it has come apart. Don't lift the car just jack up the engine some.
Then go to ebodies.org where everyone hangs out this site no longer has any traffic.

:iagree:  also, I corrected the domain name, there's a dash between the "e" and "bodies".

I know its been awhile since this thread was started but I just got back on (for now).

Not super uncommon, you are feeling the torque of the engine/trans but I would check the mounts (engine and trans) to be sure. Put a toque strap on the engine just for good measure.

Yeah, speaking as a ghost, I figure the gear change made the engine/trans work harder as opposed to the previous gear and that may have been the straw that broke the camel's back mount-wise. Pretty common in the manual cars even back in the day. Good luck.
