Tranny tunnel strengh?
« on: June 20, 2008 - 11:20:15 PM »
Wondering about strength if i were to cut an access panel to get to the driver side of the transmission. I'm really tired of having to get around the exhaust pipe got get to the shifter adjustments. I have frame connectors welded into the car. not sure how much strength the tranny tunnel adds to the car and if an 8 x 12 portion were removed, would that cause any additional stress to the car. I know tube frame chassis are totally independent of the sheet metal. But not sure if the unibody factory frames are able to handle it. I have been surprised at the parts that can be removed like the total removal of all of the inner metal on the engine compartment while leaving only the shock tower and that is OK. Still surprised at that. So that is what leaves me to asking about the tranny tunnel.
Figure I'll cut out an 8 x 12 area and then refab a larger area to overlap and set it in with zeus fasteners. Don't even bother with the "its not original" stuff...

it adds some strength but not as much as the subframe connectors will make up for so go ahead
