a 70 shifter you slide a .010 feeler gauge on one side and just jerk it out. I learned that here, man it was easy
Another hint. My slip in handle was really stuck so I put a long 5/16 bolt in to one of the holes under the grip and gently tapped up on the bolt to free the handle.

Went to Lowes and bought #8 x 5/8 oval head stainless phillips self-tapping head screws.  Les stha $2 for a package of 5.
