Ah Crap !!!!
« on: June 26, 2008 - 01:29:13 PM »
I'm in the process of tearing down my car for a paint job. Mainly to learn -and budget -I am doing it myself. The fun began with taking all the trim off. Broke a few of the rocker clips/window trim clips ect. (darn it     >:(  )  Then I went to the back window  trim witch went o'k. Then to the windshield trim.  A little different outcome. I was prying on a stubborn clip in the upper right passenger side a little to hard and heard a pop---and broke a piece of the windshield.  Took a chunk of glass about the size of a quarter off. It of cource extended about a 1/4" below the trim piece (ah crap   :hyper:  ) Now I had to decide to replace the windshield or live with it.  I was trying to not have to take the windshield out but upon further inspection I noticed a little rust in the A pillar on the drivers side. The viny top had a very small hole about the size of a bic pen tip 3/4 of the way up and I found some rot. (Ah Crap  :pullinghair:  )  So now the windshield has to come out and rear glass too while I was at it to check the back also.  I had a buddy come over to help---got some wire and dowels-- and proceeded to cut it loose. About 3/4 of the way around we broke the wire. In getting the wire back thru I took a screwdriver and pryed just a little bit on the glass  when it happened.  It started at the spot where I put the quarter size chip in and cracked almost half way down the windshield (AH CRAP  #$%*  :villagers:  ) Talk about an unsmooth moment. Now I will be calling Mopardave with an order in the near future.  I guess it just goes with wrenching but I really hate doing stupid things like this.  Like the time I plugged in my belt sander and had the trigger locked in the on position. It took off across the bench like a scalded cat right into an open gallon can of house primer.  You can picture the rest.    :scared:    Anyone else have some not so bright moments.   :banghead:    My list is long- so as not to embarrasse myself further here are some pics.   Doug

I'm sorry - I'm not laughing at you, but the escalating "ah craps" had me rolling.

I don't have too many "ah craps" on the 'Cuda, but more than I could remember on my other car.  Ya know - the kind were you go to make one, small custom modification, and end up with 2 BIG repairs to make when you're done?

Ah, the fun of automobiles...

:iagree:  My first "Ah crap" was probably my worst.  My first car, in 1984 (age 20), was a 1975 Honda Civic CVCC - son of the pregnant roller skate Honda 600.  The first time I tried to tune it, I was replacing the points and ended up unscrewing the base plate of the distributor and then dropping the screw into the depths of the distributor.  I was smart enough at that point to say "Don't go any further."  I lived at the top of a hill and at the bottom was a gas station.  Rolled it down the hill to the gas station and had them fix it.  I didn't try a tune-up again for about three years, until someone gave me "How to Keep Your Honda Alive: A Repair Manual for the Compleat Idiot" akin to one of the "Dummy" books written specifically for the Civic: http://www.amazon.com/Keep-Honda-Alive-Step-Step/dp/0912528559/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214513679&sr=8-1  It's still the best automotive manual I've ever read.  That's what really got me started in the automotive hobby.  I still have a lot to learn.

If you are working on your car outside, and the wind is a blowing the car cover you have rolled up on top of the car... DON'T place a hammer on the cover to hold it up there.   :nono:  Said hammer will soon come crashing down on your S/E trim molding below the rear quarter windows.   :stomp:

Man Doug & the rest of the crowd; WOW
I feel better now!! I was going to post a rant on here, but feel bad now from what Doug has said!! Although I am still laughing, it's not funny when it happens and not to mention the cost factor!! :scared: I just bought a real nice billet aluminum wire loom set. Each wire retainer (clam shell type) is plastic with an allen set screw (or two) to hold the wires in place. I was trying to run the wires on one side and get the lengths right and dropped one of the plastic pieces. It went to parts unknown into the car parts twilight zone....doo-doo-doo-doo!! :roflsmiley: I looked everywhere for that stupid piece of plastic. I even got out an inspection mirror and 500 watt quartz light. I looked under the car, on top, in, through, under, over and around. No plastic piece? :clueless: So now I spend another $54 bucks for a new loom set to replace one STUPID little piece of plastic!! :swear: :stomp: :swear: :stomp:. NOW I feel better!! Sorry Doug!! :bananasmi :roflsmiley: :crying:

Not to hijack the thread, but it might just give Doug a laugh. I cooled off, went into the garage and pulled out a piece of brass square stock and proceeded to make a wire loom bracket and made a pretty darn fine one if I might say, but in the process I burned up my dremmel motor!! Some times it just doesn't pay to go into the garage!! :roflsmiley: :roflsmiley: :roflsmiley:

I'm not even going to get into  what things I did or didn't do..........but you probably needed a new windshield anyway.  I did after I broke mine.  Anyway, Napa  got me one for about $150.

I'm getting ready to put my 3rd windshield in the Cuda! Had the first one put in, then peppered it while grinding inside the car (don't ask). Had the second one put in while the car was being painted and not only was the paint job crap, but apparently the guy didn't know how to install windshields either. About a month out of the shop it developed a stress crack at the bottom on the passenger's side and within a short period of time it was all the way to the top. Hopefully three's a charm! :eek4:

I've got a good ah crap. When I was in high school my Dad gave me my first car which was an 83 bronco with a newly rebuilt motor he just put in. Well it needed a new carb so my Dad told me to take it off and put a new one on. In the process of taking off the carb I lost one of the nuts. My Dad asked where I lost it I told him in the garage. so he says no big deal I have a bunch of extra nuts. So we put ont the carb and I crank the engine and whala I found the nut. Cracked the whole block. At the time I was living in socal with my Mom. My Dad drove out from Colorado to visit and help me out. My Dad went back to Colorado that Sunday and came back on the next Friday and put another engine in for me. My Dad took good care of me.

That's an incredible price!  How long ago was that?  I wonder if they still sell them.  And I wonder if the Cuda and Challenger share the same windshield curvature.

Ebody front winders are the same. My local glass shop installed mine at my home.   156.00 installed  That was the total. The windshield cost 99.00 at a glass shop the 66.00 was for travel, glue, install and tax

I put it in around Oct, 07, but I had bought it in 06.  I don't think they have gone up too much. And not sure about the cuda/chally being the same.
