81 Imperial with Fuel Injection
« on: June 24, 2008 - 09:27:14 AM »
Anyone deal with this? '81 318 with factory fuel injection.  Won't start and I'm not going to yank it off and replace it with a carb.  Fixing it for a guy and I have never seen one before.  I need a manual or a website that gives me some troubleshooting tips.  I found a couple sites but was checking if someone here has owned or fixed one of these.

Who the he!! puts a fuel pump INSIDE the air cleaner, besides Chrysler.

never worked on one , but it should be the same as any , you need fuel pressure & sensors need to work , so test fuel pressure & sensors , if it is still not working possibly the computer has a problem

"Won't start and I'm not going to yank it off and replace it with a carb".

Thats what they used to do at the dealerships on these. We don't have the 81 book on the shelf and I'm pretty sure it's a one year system. Let me check another source we have.
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

Also i've got an 83 Chrysler RWD book on the shelf that covers the system, let me know what you want/need and I can send it. Is it lacking fuel or spark (I'm assuming fuel)

I found that site yesterday and printed a bunch of stuff to check from that long thread.  I'll start checking what they recommend after it stops raining. I have the same problems as some of those postings from 11 years ago. Starts with gas put into the carb , then dies. I'm going to start with the fuel pump in the tank, then follow it to the high pressure pump the to the injectors to see what I have.    I guess they were trying to start a whole new system, but it died when the regular mechanics couldn't fix it.  It's funny when I look at the engine compartment, all of the electronic modules melted all of the goo protecting the circuit boards and dripped out like sticky hot-melt glue and puddled underneath them.  What a modern marvel! (yeah right)
