Pulley alignment
« on: June 26, 2008 - 04:05:42 PM »
Has anyone ever had a problem with alignment of March pulleys using factory brackets? I used spacers on the crank pulley to align with the alt. and waterpump but there is no way I can use that many spacers for the power steering pump without throwing off the other two. March is being no help what so ever. They asked if there is anyway I can space the power steering pump back to alignment. Well if there were, why would I be calling them? Any help? See pic

Have you got a standard pulley for the power stear pump ?  i was just wondering if it has an offset pulley or straight pulley like March have supplied. :dunno:

I have been e-mailing them all day and gave them all the part numbers including pulleys and they said "Ok, well those part numbers should be correct if you are using factory brackets". I am reusing the same brackets that came off the car. I have'nt heard back from them since then.

I had no luck with march when my pulleys didn't line up either. compare the ps pulley to a stock one to see if the offset is the same from the pic it looks like it should be offset towards the pump more but ??? Is your pulley a bolt on or press on? (assuming press on since it looks like a saginaw pump) can it be pressed on more?

Well, here is what March came up with to fix my problem. Who would have thought I would have to spend more money with them? Here is the e-mail from them.

"Well, I am sure we would have a power steering pulley listed at the link below that would fall within the offset you need.  Just looking at the photos, comparing to the 530 you have now, I would guess the 510 or 540 would be pretty close to lining up.  Now, after talking to my engineer, he said the problem may be that you have a factory bracket that orginally used a Mopar Federal power steering pump, not the GM saginaw pump that you have now.  Even though you can mount the GM pump with the bracket, the Federal pump would have had a different offset than the GM pump, which would explain why the pulley is not aligning.  My best recommendation would be to take a look at the chart at the link below to get the correct pulley that will align.  I apoligize for your inconvenience and understand your frustrations.  We do our best to make everything as bolt on as possible, however sometimes you run into unique applications or instances such as this."

can someone post pictures of their power steering pump setups, I would not buy other parts from march, been there, done that. Compare some stock setups to yours and note the pulley offset and bracket setup before doing anything. Would suck to spend more money with them and have more parts that don't fit. I am a little concerned that there is a space between the pump bracket and the rear support bracket that bolts to the timing cover.

A spacer is suppose to go in there but I didn't put it in there because I have taken the darn pump in and out so many times, I must have forgotten this time but it did not improve anything.

It looks like it needs a 3/16 to 1/4 spacer behind the main bracket to push the unit back and the back would come right up to the back bracket.

That would push the back to the back bracket but the front is not going anywhere because of the front two brackets, and that is the problem.

You got the propper saginaw pump and brakets on there. I see them.  Where the pump mounts to the bracket might take the spacers there, then where the front bracket mounts with the bolts the spacers there....you think?

How much space is there between the rear of the pump pulley and the front of the ps pump on the shaft? Oh and what moparal said, could space the pump casting from the front bracket a 1/4 (front bracket > spacer > ps pump > rear bracket)
