4 speed
« on: March 17, 2004 - 08:55:07 PM »
Just found a 4 speed manual tranny from a 78 Aspen for $75. Wondering if this will fit a 74 barracuda with a small block? Would this be a 833 tranny or did they put a different tranny in the Apsen's?? he's aslo throwing in the starter for that price sounds like a great price!!

I will be an 833 tranny but it is an OD unit will not bolt in the 74 Cuda  you may want to grab it though it woul dmake goiod trde bait to get the long tailshaft version that will bolt in , a A&F body ODs are harder to get

CP are you saying if it is a OD unit it will NOT  bolt right in to  a 74 cuda and if it is a regular 833 it will bolt in to the 74 cuda

I think he means that you need a long tailshaft tranny
and the F-body has a short one.

the long tailshaft is needed because of the shifter
location.

I bought a '70 Barracuda that had a 833 from a A-body
and I drove it around that for awhile. The guy who did
it just cut a hole for the shifter in front of the stock hole

When I took it apart I noticed the metal from the hole
was still there but bent down on one side so all I did
bend it back up and weld up the slots
Like they say on E-bay (easy fix) :D

the OD has no effect , A & F body trannies are short tailshft units & will not bolt in , you need a long tailshaft B, E , or truck tranny to bolt in

Thank your for clarifying that!

I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to tranny, but I'm assuming that there is a big difference in length between the short and long shaft, would you guys have length for the long shaft or short shaft?? so I could measure a tranny if I every find one for a good price!!

Thank you

The tranny you need is 27 " long from where it sits on the belhousing to th eend of the tail housing & has a 3 bolt flange for the shifter at the very rear of the tailshaft housing
