70 Cuda Trunk Light Switch
« on: July 14, 2008 - 06:10:06 PM »
Gentlemen,
You've all been a Godsend to the completion of this project, and I'm sure someone out there can steer me through another minor snag. Have the original trunk wiring harness installed and most things connected, only to discover that the trunk light has no switch anywhere to be found. Again, I didn't take the car apart and the guy that did no longer works in the shop. What I do have is a brown wire from the light socket in the trunk lid that has been cut at about the 2 foot mark. I also have about a 2 foot long brown wire of the same gauge, also cut, that exits the main rear wiring harness at about where the fuel tank sending unit wire exits. There must be a pressure switch or mercury switch that's missing and a mounting place for it as well. Is there anyone who can solve this puzzle? Gene

Gene,

My car doesn't have that option, but I understand it's a mercury switch operated light. I could be wrong, but I believe the switch is part of the light bulb assembly. Open the trunk, the mercury goes down, and contact is made. I only saw one once a long time ago, but in looking at it, I didn't realize it had a mercury switch. I wish I could be of more help.

Mike's right, the switch is part of the socket assembly. I just checked my spare trunk light with an ohmmeter and as I tilted the assembly back and forth there was & wasn't continuity on the feed wire. Gene, BTW, I posted more pics of the splash shield today, the car hasn't been touched now for 2 weeks.  :stomp:

Thanks guys, but the trunk light in this car must be original, as the owner is the original owner of car. I took apart the trunk light socket and bracket to clean it up and repaint the bracket it mounts to, and there is definitely no mercury switch on this beast. Its simply a plastic socket with a spring loaded lead in wire, that plugs into the metal mounting bracket. I guess I'll have to ask the owner just which way he wants to go on this.
