Vin# on engine?
« on: June 29, 2008 - 08:26:06 AM »
  Can the vin # on the engine give info on what type body the engine was originaly in?   The vin# down by the oil pan rail is     F199321            and the pad up by the distributer is stamped,,,,

                                              J 440         HP

                                              2          9

    I spaced that as it appears on the pad,,,,,,,,  does this info tell any thing about what year and body type it came from?

                     Thanks.............

Yes & no , it gives the plant the engine was installled at & from that we know only certain models were produced at the plant , but it will not give you specific body type the engine came from

"J" would mean 1973

Doesn't apply in this instance, but a couple of years had the full VIN (i.e., not just the sequence number) stamped on the block.

Thanks fellas I do appreciate the help  :2thumbs:........

 So  it goes like this right?

 J= 1973

 440= obvious 440

 HP= High Performance

 2      9  =      Assembly plant?    Which plant?

 Since this is a 1973 440 hp it would most likely be a Road Runner engine so 2  9 would be a Road Runner assembly plant?

The assembly plant for the car it came out of will be on the VIN pad. Look on the passenger side of the block, about mid-engine (front to back) slightly above the oil pan rail.

          Thanks nice to know what plant it came from,  but what state is  the Newark plant?    So if I was to search for a 70 date coded block  what would the the code for the Hamtrack plant be?  If you have a 70 car with a 10/69  build date does that mean you would have a 69 date coded engine?

And a '73 440 out of the Newark plant would have come in a C body.
