1970 N Code -->JH29 -->E63 -->H51 --> Engine color??
« on: July 05, 2008 - 04:05:54 PM »
Okay I need some help. As noted elsewhere on here (restoration/pics area) I am restoring an early-ish N code SE challenger. I have the fender tag which took a little work  due to the original being extremely fragile from battery acid damage..or something that caused an awful lot of rust to the tag. Anyway, the car has air conditioning, but the original engine was blown by the original owner, after he blew it he put a 440 in it.

My car calls for the E63 engine, which is supposed to mean magnum and an orange block except in my research I have read that A/C cars recieved a blue block @330 H.P.

Can anyone help me clear this up? I don't really care either way other than just trying to find out what exactly is supposed to be in there even though I am putting the 440 back in for the time being while I find a date coded 383.

I wouldn't need an H.P block would I? Or would I need an H.P block? What block would I need to match whatever is supposed to be on a car with N code, A/C, power steering, disc brakes, rallye dash and not R/T?

The car was built on 10 / 07 / 1969 if that helps.

Any help *most* appreciated! I really don't know what I don't know, and before I go searching in google land for a date coded block I need to know what codes to look for.

Good lord this stuff gets complicated.

Anyway, thanks for a great community here. This is the best place I have found on the interwebz for this stuff. You guys and gals rock.

I think I got it, it would be blue even though it says E63. Sound right?

I think that the R/T challengers got the Hemi orange paint and the Non R/T Challengers had the Turquise painted engines.......
so it would be a Turquise engine in your case being an SE Challenger :2thumbs:

That is how i see it anyways :2thumbs:

E63 only means 383-4bbl. It does not tell you which version (HP or not...orange or blue) the car recieved...

Do you have the broadcast sheet or only the tag?
Is the car an automatic or four speed?

I don't have the broadcast sheet, and have searched everywhere for it. I found pieces of one back behind the glove box but they were so damaged by water ( bad leak from windshield) that it was pretty much useless. Also pieces of mice eaten broadcast sheet were found in the back seat but they too were useless.

This must have been blue engine. The transmission does match the car, and is a 747 automatic transmission.

Anyway, I think the engine was blue/turquoise, with dual exhaust, etc. It really doesn't matter it is just a 5 h.p difference anyway....

I am going on vacation for the next 10 days. Will check this thread once I get back. Y'all have a good one. :)

I was going to say that the N code was the Magnum & the M was the 383 4 bbl so the engine should be orange , not sure what diff the A/C woudl make

Hey this thread was buried over at Moparts, and sheds a lot of light on the topic. Apparently N code cars in '70 recieved the orange or blue engine depending on a/c or non a/c transmission, and how the winds of fate at the assembly plant were blowing that day.

Hopefully anyone else with an N code car with engine questions can search this thread and learn more about thier correct setup. Unfortunately in my case since both broadcast sheets were beyond any help and only a few pieces remained... In my case the questions remain.

However here is what I do know from the thread at Moparts.

Non A/C, 4 speed N code cars got the orange engine regardless of JH, JS, BH, BS etc..
Some A/C four speed cars got the orange engine.
Some non-A/C auto cars got the orange engine.
Some A/C + automatic cars got the H.P. Engine as well..

Most of the AC cars got the blue 330 HP engine.

You have to have your buildsheet to make sure which engine your car really got. YMMV!

So any way here is the thread for anyone searching about Non R/T cars with the N-code four barrels...
