Melting shifter cables???
« on: March 22, 2004 - 11:07:39 AM »
On my 70 440 Cuda i keep melting shifter cables.  I just bought a new one 2 weeks ago and it melted within 30 miles of driving. I have 1 7/8" headers which were ceramic coated, I route the cable away from the headers and the closest it gets to them is about 3". It does not melt the outside covering, it melts the inside to where the shaft will not move in the cable any more.. ???

I have a 2GA cable coming up from my battery and a 12v wire lead which both are closer to the headers than the shifter cable gets and they have been like that for a year now..

I have a B&M quick silver shifter w/ 4' cable. I have tried 5, ft,  hurst cables, etc. nothing works..

anyone have suggestions or the same problem?  anyone know of a better shifter cable out there?

thanks for your help

Tracy

this is a constant frustration , a far better cable could be easily designed but why ?? they make millions selling these junk cables , just 1 more reason why I hate Automatics!! The best solution is the factroy slapstick

This may sound wierd, but are your body grounds good? If not, the wire cable could be carrying the ground load. Check your ground cables.

you know i think your onto something here. After my car gets warm it will hardly start, like I have a low battery or a bad ground etc,  when the cables melt they do not melt from the outside in, they are  gumming up inside the cable. I was going to take it over to a buddy of mine house who has lots of experience with this stuff. he has said since I talked with him that I probably have a bad ground somewhere....

thanks for the tip!!
