Opinions need on maximum bore for a 318 (1973)

Also I have a 340, how do you tell what year it would be?

Thanks

Sonic check the block, that will tell you how far you can safely go. .060 isn't out of the question and I've heard rumors up up to .100 but have never known any one who has gone that far.

Date code should be cast into the side of the block.

I had one at .040" over and I beat the crap out of it with no problems. It saw over 7,000rpm many times.

A question:  Why bother with a 318 if you have a 340? It has much stouter main caps and rods.

You should only determine the overbore after sonic checking it. It could be a wasted block or you could go way overbore.

All the more reason to oil it down and put it in the corner of the qarage and build the 340. That is, unless you don't mind gettin yer butt drug by everything on the road because your 2 bbl 318 is such a slow turd  :D

If you have a 340, then great. But they are hard to find. I also have a numbers matching 318 that i will probably build. I know an engine builder in my area that has told me he can economically build a 318 to 390 hp.

390 real hp isn't gonna happen easily with a 318 without using 340 heads, and the 340 rods are so much stronger that it makes little sense to use the small 318 rods on a motor you'll need to rev to make power with, so if you end up with a 318 with 340 parts in it you're better off just building the 340 you took the parts from cause you won't have to spend extra $$ to balance it. Even the good SB rods they now sell are all 340 type rods, so why spend almost the same amount to rebuild weaker 318 rods?
Why invest money in a motor that has less cubes and less internal strength than a 340 or 360? That's like building a 361 BB instead of a 383 or 440. Their are plenty of 360's around for the same price a 318 costs (motor core AND parts) and you have 42 more cubes to start with. Everything costing about the same I'll always opt for the extra cubes and hp at a lower RPM. That being said, a 390hp 318 in a average weight E-body better be doing about 110mph in the 1/4 mile, or the only 390hp it has is "theoretical".   :2cents:

If you can't find a 360 for a couple hundred bucks, you're not looking very hard.

360 are a dime a dozen. I thought we were talking about 340's?

A numbers matching 318 car is always a toss up as far as value goes. A non original 340 or big block is likely worth more than an all original 318 car unless you have some other highly desirable options on it.
