Front suspension "Clunk" or "Popping"
« on: July 25, 2008 - 04:01:53 PM »
At least, I'm 90% sure it's in the front suspension....   :clueless:

My set-up:
I completely rebuilt the front end about 4 years ago.  I haven't driven it until recently, as there was no engine in it. New Polygraphite bushings, and new tie rods and ball joints.  I replaced the K-frame, the original one was worn horribly at one of the front strut rod holes, along with a replacement strut rod.  I added a huge-ass Hellwig swaybar while I was at it.  Original power steering.

Symptom:
Sometimes when backing out of my driveway, or after backing up then moving forward, I hear a "pop" or "clunk".  Everything seems tight when I checked it, but I haven't used a pry bar yet, but it kinda has me confused.  Seems like a lower control arm issue possibly, but all the bushings are new.

Where should start checking first?  How would you go about looking for this?

I want to 100% dial in the front end on this thing!   :swear:

Are you sure that it isn't a U joint?

I have Poly bushings in mine, no clunk, but i can tell the difference from rubber. Im going rubber in the next car... I would say look at the U joint first, you sure its not in the rear??

I'd guess strut rod bushings. My passenger side strut rod pops like that. If i roll out of the backyard and stop decent, i'll get a "pop" out of that side. Didn't know what it was for awhile and it hit me that the control arm is moving just a hair and the strut rod isn't keeping it in place. I'll get to it someday!

well, 73, I just think its a stiff ride that isnt completely necessary. I think I get a little extra vibration through the ecar b/c of it....  :blah: I just figure I'll do rubber in the dart and see what the difference is....

I had a strange issue like that. The geometry of the suspension does weird things in different situations, turned out being a bolt on the inner tie-rod  rubbing across the collector of the drivers side header, another reason I don't like headers.

I had a noise coming from my front end when I put it all back together and it ended up being the strut rod not being tightened enough.

Doh!!  I didn't even think to check the U-joints!  The only thing that's not brand new on the list!

Thanks for the list of stuff to check, I'll get under the car tonight, see if I can't find anything.   :working:
