Hemi conversion thoughts

I have an auto recycler's license that allows me to bid on and purchase totaled vehicles from various insurance companies; as a hobby, I usually buy about three or four cars a years to fix up; some I keep, some I resale. I am starting to see several hemi cars and trucks at these sales.  I am wondering what these engines and transmissions are worth. For the most part, many of these vehicles are under 50,000 miles. I guess I am thinking about putting one in an ebody.  Any ideas on horse power, magazine articles on engine swaps; basically anything that may be of interest on this topic.    :working:

Not much help now but I believe Mopar Muscle is supposed to be detailing a new Hemi swap into something.  Not sure what the car will be, though.

I would think that the engine should be less than half of a crate unit.  Check out Mancini Racing for all of the conversion pieces including oil pan, headers, mounts, tranny adaptor IIRC, etc.  I would look for an SRT8 unit with the 425 hp :)

I believe XV racing has full conversion kits.  They seem pretty tight.  I have been considering the same thing and they have about the best info.

The 5.7s are going for around $1500 on Ebay without wiring harness and ECM, and between $2000 and $2500 with harness and ECM and even more with the tranny. Just bare 5.7s with no harness, ECM or accessories (alternator, A/C compressor, etc.) usually no more than $1200 and often less than $1000. It's hard to say on the 6.1 hemis as there haven't been too many show up yet and the ones that do the seller thinks it's gold plated or something and no one bids on it!

I can't figure out why the ones with the harness and ECM are valued for so much more, as the harness has to be modified and the ECM reprogrammed to use them on a retrofit because they are tied into the original donor vehicles gauges and won't work without being modified! Street & Performance in Mena, Arkansas will do the necessary mods, but it will cost you about $1300.

XV Motorsports and F.A.S.T. both sell the electronics to do a conversion. The XV setup uses the new MSD Hemi6 controller for the ignition and they have a 4 barrel intake that they use with either carb or port injectors with a throttlebody. I believe they use a F.A.S.T. controller for their injection, but I'm not positive on that. Edelbrock now has their dual four barrel intake out on the market and it is about $100 less than XV's single four manifold. Mopar Performance has a single four manifold also, but the price has gone through the roof and I've heard from folks who have dynoed the new hemis with both manifolds that the XV manifold is good for at least 20 H.P. over the M.P. manifold. The problem with the XV manifolds is that right now they are at least 2 months behind on production. Go ahead and ask me how I know! :pullinghair: Another problem you will run into on the retro swaps is the oil filter. On the A bodies you have to use a remote oil filter mount. There is a 45 degree filter adapter used on Jeep applications that will let you use an engine mount filter in the E and B bodies, but those have been on national back-order with Mopar for at least 4 months now with no idea when they will become available and my parts guy hasn't been able to locate one at any dealership in the country! Right now you're basically limited to a remote filter mount on the E and B bodies too.

I am in the process of doing a swap and will be writing an article with pics for Scott over at thehemi.com when it's done.
