Battery Disconnect
« on: August 03, 2008 - 11:15:08 AM »
Just wondering how many prefer to disconnect their battery when the car is dormant for a few weeks. I have heard that there is always the possibility of a short and subsequent damage or even a fire if left connected. How legitimate are these claims.

Well i guess anything is possible as far as that goes, I do have a battery disconnect switch at the back of my car since my battery is back there...i do switch it off if it's going to sit. Only thing that stays powered is my radio memory.

That's the main reason I asked. Just installed a new radio and resetting the memory is a pain.

I have a battery disconnect. If the car sits for a month, the old-school clock will put a hurtin' on my battery. Besides, I always worry about something stupid happening. Like my horn just decides it wants to voice itself for no reason.   :stomp:

Depending on the type of battery disconnect you use, you can wire the radio 'memory' feed to the battery side of the switch, so you don't cut it off everytime.

Yeh the clock must use some voltage too,, didn't think about that. Good incentive to drive her more often.  :jumping:

Thinking back I have had the battery cables connected pretty much the past 30 years with no problems. My wiring is in good shape also so I'm not going to worry about it.
