Two easy questions regarding 440's and Carbs...
« on: August 01, 2008 - 11:50:10 AM »
Just curious - obviously the 440-6 pack is a popular engine combo - did the 440's come factory WITHOUT 6 pack carbs in the 70-74 range (actually I don't think 440's were even available in 73 or later, right?)

And second, is it a PROBLEM if you only intend on running a 440-4?  I mean, I know a lot of people do that - like 4C for example.  I guess I just wonder if you're really doing the engine an injustice or if with newer carb designs they still get plenty of air and fuel.

Just curious.  I reeeeeaallllly doooooonnnn''''t waaaaaant a 6 pack setup.  :)

There were 4 bbl 440 cars, and they ran pretty hard too.  As a matter of fact, I owned a 440-6bbl car that was raced once in a while, and switched it to a large Holley 4bbl because it was quicker that way.  It was probably quicker only because I was no good at tuning the 6bbl set up, and knew a little more about the Holleys.  If I still had that car it would be wearing the 6bbl set up.  They look cool.

Only in 1970, there was a 440-4 option and a 440+6.  In 1971 it was 440+6 only.  1972-1974 there was no big block option.

If Im not mistaken Michele has her +6 set up for sale on here in the parts for sale section and the price is right as my Grandmas buddy Bob Barker would say.

Yeah at Carlisle they were talking about switching to a 4bbl setup because the 6bbl was too sluggish to respond to the throttle due to linkage constraints, etc.

Nah, I'm going to stick with a 4bbl.  I don't know how to tune ONE carb...  :)

Jeff

BTW, I only asked because finding plain " 'Cuda440 " badges is very difficult - everything reads "Cuda440-6"
