New tires for Dragway?
« on: August 02, 2008 - 06:11:20 PM »
I'm going to pick up some new tires for another trip to the dragway soon.  Should I stick with something in the 26" range or go to a taller tire?  I have 3.23's in the car now.  I'm going to get some M/T ET radial streets.  Also a driveshaft loop too.  I hope to have my new trans in tomorrow if all goes well...

I was thinking a taller tire might help with the Wheelspin?  Or should I assume that the stickier tires will Hook?  I could only muster a dismal 2.26 60' time in my last trip.  With excessive wheelspin I had to let off the gas and then get back on it.

BTW I have a set of 15x7 Torque thrusts to use.  I'd rather not get new rims at this point.  I was eyeing some 255/60/15 ET radial streets.  These are a 27.1" tire.  Do you think i can get a decent hook with this size tire?

With 3.23s you are better off with a 25 or 26" tall tyre.Rely on the stickiness to help hook.
Get as wide a tyre as you can fit on your 15x7s.Keep dropping the pressure till the rear feels "squirrelly" in the top end and then add 1 or 2 psi.
Pump the fronts up to 50psi.
Don't underestemate the humble adjustable pinion snubber as a low dollar traction aid.
If you have sway bars then remove them for the drag day.

Hope this helps.
Burnouts are cool but Traction is the Action

I have the snubber already set up 3/4" from the floor pan now.  It seems that the 255's are the largest size recommended for the 7" rims.  I do have F+R sway bars, do I need to unhook both or just the front?

Since I have only been once before and with regular street radials, will I be able to "give it gas" off the line or still have to feather it?  Probably only get a few runs in so I would like to get the most out of them.
