Value of a cuda
« on: August 05, 2008 - 03:39:45 PM »
I am looking at a '70 cuda that is a 340 car...numbers matching.  The car is solid, but has a couple pieces taken off door and a fender.  The guy wants 25,000 for this car..is that a fair price.  I have no pictures, not tell I buy it.  I am a mustang guy...I know what numbers matching values are on one of those.  How does the value of a 340 car compare to a 440 car?  I am looking at one of those as well, but the 340 car is more affordable. Thanks for the help.

While we are on the value topic, what is a 440 car with all the sheet metal work done, completely disassembled with a period correct 440 worth?  The guy wants 35,000 ish for this car.  Is that high or with in reason....I still have to finish the car?

They are still project cars and are too expensive I think.   How much is dependent on what condition I would need pics and more description to comment further on.  Some guys who are looking to liquidate take the top market asking value for the finished car and then subtract a very optimistic cost of completing the car and then add $5k :)  Where is the upside for you as a buyer?

I know the value of these cars are going up, and thought they would be a great addition to my collection.   As a ball park where would you start on the 340 car.  This car is a 4 speed as well.

What would you offer on a 440 car as a ball park just don't want to loose my butt on this deal?  Disassembled in primer...still needing body work, but comes with a period correct 440 and trans.

If the prices are high, that tells me why they are still there.

Maybe he could by it back for the same price when you're done the work.  :dunno:

I think they're both overpriced, especially in today's market.  Like many of us on here, I go back and forth about selling mine.  Mine is an original 383, now a 440 (but not date-correct) in pieces, not too much rust (SoCal car), but disassembled and needing a good restoration.  If I were to sell it, I'd be happy if I got more than $5k for it.

I'm no expert on pricing but you do some searching yourself.  I would estimate a professional or near professional restored '70 Cuda 340 4 speed matching numbers, would go for $40 to $50 tops (totally finished).  Prices are probably going down and not up right now.  So his car needs $15-20 to finish and maybe more.  I'm assuming some work is done already and is of good quality.  I think you are looking at $20K tops.  It might only be worth $10 or $15.  Again, photos and a better description would help a lot but I'm just trying to put you somewhere in the ballpark as far as values go.

Definitely way over priced, probably close to twice as much as they are actually worth.

Go to your local book store magazine rack and pick up a copy of Old Cars price guide.  Believe it or not, the guy who does the annual insurance appraisal on mine uses it when challenged by an insurance company on a appraisal.

Then you can also amaze your friends with how much you know about how much cars are worth...

the value is what you wish to pay for the car. as a seller, I want as much as I can get. As a buyer, I would like to get it for as little as possible. Bottom line is what your comfortable paying. Generally the hairs on the back of your neck will tell you alot if you listen. If you pay a little more than you wanted to, and we all know what we want to pay, then you will probably get a good basis to start with. I would much rather pay more up front then more on the backside. Goodluck!

Seems like the price is pretty high to me. Here is a link to a #'s matching 340 Cuda that was for sale on the board for $13,000 that was a sweet deal.

Good deals can be had in the current market. No need in overpaying for the car you found.
