First Year of Radial Tires on Challenger
« on: August 11, 2008 - 08:16:24 PM »
Just Curious:  My 1974 Chally owners manual references "optional" avaialbe radial tires, whereas my '70 manual doesn't say a thing about them.....    What was the first year that radial tires were available for Challengers?

Radials in the US came about in 1966 and by 1973 most cars were using them.  Not sure when they were avalible on the Challengers, but I'd guess around 73.

I don't have any '74 documentation, but my 1973 service manual says that all Chrysler cars came with cross or bias belted tires.  Radials could be used but there were cautions about harsh ride at low speeds and different handling characteristics.

sounds like you answered your own ?  I would bet 74 was the first year as an option
setting most of these cars to factory alignment specs generally results in poor handling with radial tires

Chryco.....    I suspected that '74 was the first year....... was at my first real car show with my '70 and was docked a couple of points for radial tires..... so was just curious....
