Please recommend some gauge manufacturers
« on: August 06, 2008 - 09:58:01 AM »
I am new to the hobby.  I am getting ready to start the interior of my project and I will be modernizing my dash.  I planned on using autometer guages but the models I like are quite pricey.  I'll suck it up and pay if I have to but I am interested in options.

I was wondering what others on this site use or recommend other than autometer?  Or a good place to find used autometer guages ( most autometer guages on Ebay are new and being sold at suggested retail)

I'm not cheap and want quality but I am just looking at options.  Is there better bang for the buck out there?

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

When it comes to monitoring the heartbeat of your baby, I would always go with the best, and to me that is Autometer.  Just my .  As far as looking for used gauges, I would for the same reason above.  The percentage of cost for good gauges is just a fraction of the total you will spend on your car.

Autometer except I haven't been able to get my fuel gauge remotely accurate, with the 'right' resistance sender. May be 'user error' but regardless, it's not accurate at all. I have to go by miles and guesstimate.

Stewart Warner is the best Guage I can Find , VDO is decent too
 I will not use Autometer
I have had 4 guage failures in a year or less & last week I had a customer boost guage reading nothing , we swapped to a S W guage & the car was making 4 psi boost , , 2 days a go I was working with a heating problem & the autometer guage is reading 10* too high ... it is difficult to tune when the guages do not tell you what is goping on

From what i have observed over the years, Stewart warner have always been good and so have VDO, Auto meter spend big bucks on advertising and I don't think the value is really there.

I've been to autometer's home in Sycamore, I lived next door to them for the past four years.  They are a truely nice group of people and gave me some stuff to finish my custom gauge cluster.

I love mine, never had a problem.

You are right, the Autometer gauges are VERY expensive.

And that is why when I made my custom dash using all of there gauges and I went to test them, I was greatly disappointed to find that the back lights for 1 gauge didn't work and 1 would flicker.

I ended up making my own connections for them myself, as this was the problem.
But really Autometer, for over 600 bucks in gauges, you could make sure everything is in good order.

I fell for the Autometer advertising machine, but next time no.
Maybe they should consider not saving a dime to have things manufactured for them overseas and concentrate more on quality.

I'd say my  :2cents:, but again, they got ALOT more than that from me.
