Was there plastic behind the back seat from the factory?
« on: August 11, 2008 - 01:29:20 PM »
I was wondering if there was poly/plastic sealing the passenger compartment from the trunk and rear axle area of the car.  I don't remember ever seeing such thing.  Was it done?  I'm still trying to reduce the exhaust smell in the car. I was thinking of pulling the back seat and package tray and covering the area with poly -kind of like how the doors were sealed.

No plastic that I'm aware of, but there was a cardboard divider and insulation.  JayBee hooked me up with an AWESOME template that I'm using to make mine, then a CC member in the next town over will be getting it, maybe he can mail it to you when he's done, or I will if he won't.

See the link here:

I have to publicly thank JayBee again, his template is AWESOME!!!  I haven't gotten around to making it yet, but I did buy the hardboard to make it.

Should only take a couple hours max to make, and the total cost will be around $5.  Sweet!!   :woohoo:

Matt,

Once upon a time I had the same problem. The culprit? The gaskets were shot around my tail light bezels. The exhaust was getting in that way. I replaced them and haven't had any smell since.

You definitely have a problem that should be repaired correctly.
The next long road trip with the windows up could be your last.

Original dividers did not have any insulation.

I plugged one large hole in the cowl (I have no idea what went there) and things are quite a bit better now.  I had used clear silicone on the tail light gaskets.  They actually look to be in pretty good shape.  I still smell a bit like exhaust after a trip.  It's a fair weather car so I haven't taken any drives with the windows up!  I still have to plug the drain holes in the bottom of the trunk extensions to see if that helps.  I thought that sealing the trunk from the passenger compartment might help too.

You're not alone. I have been chasing the same thing. Waiting for an order from Roseville with new nuts to tighten down the taillights good and snug and see what happens. I think a lot of mine is tailpipe placement as well. I had them cut just shy of the bumber (under the valence not through).

if the 1/4s have been replaced there may be leaks between the panels [inner & outer ] , tailight seals , floor plugs & trunk seals can be an issue as well

My tips don't stick out a lot either.

That's an interesting point as the quarters have been replaced.  The trunk does leak.  I thought it was the tail lights but sealing them didn't help.  I'll have to do a little investigation with a water hose.  Perhaps it's the new trunk seal.  Either way installing a plastic liner behind the divider should take care of the problem hopefully.  I'll plug every hole I can find!

The extensions should stick out of the rear valance about 1/2 inch. If not, the exhaust will drift up under the car and into the trunk. I've seen a lot of muffler shops mount them flush to the valance for looks.

You would think weather-stripping around the trunk lid would solve this problem, but maybe not?   :dunno:
