Running temperature for a 8 3/4 shur grip rear end
« on: August 13, 2008 - 12:26:52 PM »
Have a newly rebuilt shur grip rear(new auburn unit)with all new bearings, 3.55 gears, has 90 weight gear lube plus the additive Auburn supplies. I've got now about 250 miles on it, what kind of temperature should it run at say after about a 10 mile trip on it say on the high way at 55mph? Checked it last night, it's more than warm to touch but you can keep your hand on it on the pinion area. The whole pots hot of course due to the oil. Was going to try to get a thermal gun to get some actual readings....I'm getting some noise from it but whats normal?........thx.......dk

Hot to the touch, but can keep your hand on it is normal.  NASCAR boys have coolers to run 190.

3.55's should really be quite.
