which flywheel in my 383-4
« on: August 22, 2008 - 05:14:00 AM »
Hi, yesterday I picked up my dream chally at the port. When loading onto a trailer I noticed htat there is NO inspection cover and I can clearly see the flywheel teeth when looking under the car...
Here is a photo:

I browsed YearOne website and they have 11" and 10,5" covers. The question is how to verify which one I need? I don't want to dissassemble it and count the teeth or measure the diameter. Maybe the cover bolt pattern is characteristic for one or anther? Please advise.

the only way i can think of (im sure that others have better ways) is mark one tooth, and spin the engine around and count the teeth.   :2thumbs:

From the picture, I would say you need an inspection cover for an A-727 torqueflite automatic and not a flywheel cover.  The 10 1/2" and 11" reference the bellhousing type for a 4-speed transmission.

I found this picture on Ebay

If your car is an automatic with a 383 in it, that is the part you need.  It should be reasonably available as every 727 in the recyclers yard should have had one on it.

thanks! bear in mind in Poland there's probably not even 1 383 with AT at any junkyard ;)

thanks fellows for help. i'm a bit fed up with the car because the seller described it (oh my naivety...) not accurately. it seems that the trunk fllor must be sandblasted and rebuild with epoxies or even cut. the # on rad support doesnt match VIN, some problems with wiring and lights...
and the worst - couldnt start her beacuse starter is not cranking the engine but the solenoid clicks loudly. damned.

If it is hard to find one of those, they are pretty easy to cut out of sheetmetal.  I knew guys who ran without one for years without any apparent issues.  The parts availability is getting tough here, so I can't imagine how difficult it would be in Poland.  If I had a spare I would send it to you.

Good luck with the starter and the rest of your issues.

yup, charged and even tried with another car connected. i can only imagine brushes are stuck or the plate of the switch corroded.

found the shield an YO:

Willard, sleepychallenger had a good point. Check the connections and see if the battery is charged , or charge it.  as far as the shield for your trans, that's an easy fix. If I chase a bunch of bees out of a certain shed, I will give you that part for free and I think I have the bolts for it too, era correct. If it is the trunk floor that is bad and only that part, then you are lucky and it can be repaired fairly easy.

The big issue is the rad support #s and vin. Does the Rad # match the cowl number or does the cowl number match the vin?  I am hoping the cowl number will match the dash vin and the title paper work for you. Sometimes a rad support is cut out and replaced from a wreck or engine removal.

I will post a separate thread and ask you to watch pictures and commen what i should change.
Dash, title, cowl #s match but on the rad there is another sequence. When I get under the car will check engine and trans. I paid for a # matching car and not for a clone!
Nevertheless, if it turns out the drivetrain is not the proper one, I can't just put it into a container and send back to TX and fill ebay claim (ebaymotors purchase protection does not cover intl sales).
Oh and disc brakes and power steering are not listed on FT (only "power brakes" opt) does it mean these are not original to the car? Will post tons of photos.
