Can I get a fender tag for my car (I bought it without one)
« on: August 29, 2008 - 08:31:53 AM »
Hi all, can I have some advice on getting a fender tag for my 1970 Dodge Challenger. The tag on the door says it is a 383 RT/SE, this is the only tag I can find on the whole car. I live in Australia and bought this car without a fender tag. The car was converted to right hand drive approximately 10 years ago and there are no numbers on the dash pad. I have no idea what options this car came with from the factory so I suppose I’ll never know. I don’t want to make up a whole bunch of fake options on a tag, but I would like to have some sort of basic tag for my car. I would like to know the best way to approach this. Is it my fault for buying a car without a fender tag in the first place? Initially it didn’t bother me and I did think long and hard about this before I handed over my hard earned cash but now that the car is mine it is really starting to bug me. The car is not numbers matching, the motor is now a 440 and the steering is now a rack and pinion.
Thanks in advance.

Try this guy:

http://www.datatags.com/

As long as you dont try to add a load of options on the car that it did not come with, he'll make you a tag.

Hi, thanks for the info, I’ve contacted the people at data-tags and due to the engine not being the original Ive been told that this might make it difficult to make a tag (for legal reasons).
I have found the numbers on the cowl outside of the fresh air plastic grille panel, and also on the radiator support and they both match the numbers on the door tag, I’ve let them know about this and will see if that helps. I’ll keep you posted.

I have some original tags here that have not been claimed yet.

I also know of several others.

I would rather have no tag at all than a made up, fake one.

But if your original tag has been found, that is even better................

Email me with the body number and door sticker number if you like?

Barry

Thanks Barry I’ll sent you a P.M . I’m not sure which way to go with this but I certainly don’t want to make up a bogus tag with all sorts of options. I was hoping to get a basic tag which reflects the door tag. I don’t want to do anything dodgy or underhanded and it needs to be totally transparent so any future owners will know what was done to get a replacement tag. I know the car is an R/T and was B5 Blue and it has S/E options and it had a 383 V8, it also has a 3 speed auto and that’s about all I know.
Anyway I’ll send you a couple of photos with the panel numbers and door tag number.
Thanks,
Mike Stevens

There is absolutely nothing illegal about having a fender tag made for a car with a non-matching numbers engine.  :screwy: Have you looked for a biuld sheet in the car yet?The biuld sheet will tell you everything the car came with if you are lucky enough to find it.

To hell with correctness......get a Data tags, tag and have some fun, make your own "numbers" up. I spent some time making up my own car with it's options, 540ci, 5-Speed, special order everything, etc, just put down what I'l building, love it. Just an idea is all. I do have the original tag but that's not going anywhere other than in a zip lock bag in one of the cars several folders for safe keeping.

Hey Carlwalski I like your style, 540ci, 5-Speed, now your talking!.
I think I’ll remain a little more conservative than that.

As for the legalities of making replacement tags, I can’t speak for the guys that make them but I’m sure it would be a nightmare trying to sort out fact from fiction. The good news is I have been back in touch with the Data-tag people and they said they will make me a tag as long as it is a JS29NOE number which my door tag, radiator support and vent cowl are.
I think there was some initial confusion due to the fact that my current licensing and registration says that the engine is a 440 cu and the VIN states it should be a 383 from the factory.

As far as the build sheet goes I have had a good look throughout the car to no avail, that would have been a dream come true if Id found that. I’ve got the entire interior out at the moment so every time I removed an item from the car wether it be a seat or a piece of carpet I would have a good look. The only other tags I ended up finding were some little brown cardboard ones crimped onto the underside of both the front bucket seats and some sewn on Chrysler part number tags on the top of the seat belts. Its funny how things change when they are your own, as I previously mentioned I didn’t really mind about the missing tags at first but now that this car is mine I find I want to know every little thing about it!
Thanks again for your input, I’ll keep you posted.
Cheers
