They were probably in shock looking at the size of those rods and figured there's no way one could ever fail.  :22yikes: But 37 year olds are 37 YO bolts.

I suspect it's more likely that being a performance shop, they rarely run across someone like me.  I imagine most of their customers are already bringing them new bolts and rods, so perhaps he's just used to using the bolts provided and it slipped his mind.

I'm the most dangerous kind of fool: I know just enough to get myself in trouble.  :pullinghair:  Too bad I didn't ask this question before I went to the machine shop.  Oh well, live, learn and pay a little for your mistakes.  :swaying:

Yeah, 5/16" bolts  :22yikes: There's more clamping force holding a Slant-6 1 bbl carb onto the Intake than holding the rod cap on a 302.
Even the old 2.2 4-banger chrysler motor has 3/8" rod bolts.

And yet you have all these Ford guys building blown or spray stroker small blocks and running into the 9's.  Do they suffer a lot of rod failures?  Or does the SBF design compensate in some other way?

They suffer PLENTY of failures. I've even seen the 302 blocks split completely in half. The cars you see running so good have aftermarket rods and/or stroker motors. It's had to tell what they are by just looking at them and none of them will admit what they really have anyway. They're all "Stock". Hell, mine is just a 318, right?  :smokin:

there's a local guy here, now runs a windsor based stroked with a big single turbo. He can run deep in the 8s, but the car is for street racing. He used to run stock block 5.0Ls on two stage of spray. 500hp to the tires, and split two clean in half. The 302 rod is like 5" long, and the pistons are msaller. Smaller=lighter, plus, the short strokes are slow average piston speeds.  Much less stress.

I saw one split the block at Cecil County a few years ago in the traps. Barrel rolled the car about 10 times when he got sideways in the oil. They air-lifted him out in a helicopter and took the mangled mess left of his car out on a rollback. It was entertaining to watch it roll
