Fuel Guage

Last week, for the first time -- my fuel guage stopped working while out for a spin (everything else worked fine)...... the next day, when I started it = all was well again!     Any ideas what is going on (possible ground?)    This is a '74 Rallye....

I'd take a look first back at the tank sending unit. (drivers side, behind the r/r wheel). Make sure there is a good ground strap from the sending unit to the steel fuel line, and that the sender wire is nice and tight on the sending unit. May want to do a 'wiggle-test' on both and watch the gauge.

Goody (or anyone)  --  I finally got around to checking out the wiring at the sending unit (see pic).  Am I missing something?   This short green wire just goes up through the trunk to the wiring harness.... presumably to the dash.   This is a '74 -- and the fuel guage has worked fine for the past couple of years!

the green wire is the one that runs to your gauge.  You should have a wire that runs from the fuel line to ground, should be wire between the two metal lines that the rubber line hooks to.  I do not see it in the pic.  You might check and see if it is on the other side of the rubber line

MEK     Thanks for the photo.   Does the fact that mine has a Vapor Separator Assembly make a difference?   I don't see a ground wire/strap anywhere  -- is it possible it simply fell off?    Here's a pic......

That's the factory part.  If you don't mind originality you can just add a small metal hose clamp to each side, and use a piece of wire to connect the 2.  This will actually provide a better ground than the clip on part.

And it will only cost $1

Definitely scrape/sand off that coating or paint that is on the sender before installing the strap for a good connection

fuel wire is blue not green BTW

Katfish:    good idea -- will try the wire/clamp and will scrape/sand off the paint first.   Hopefully, this solves the problem.   Still very curious as to how/why it worked for well over a year since restored the gas tank.....

Added the missing ground wire -- and now I know when to stop -- take out a small mortgage -- and fill her up again!
