Would like clarification on Barracuda/Cuda....
« on: October 25, 2013 - 08:27:11 AM »
I know this has most likely been discussed many times. I searched and came up with nothing. BUT when someone mentions or says: "Is it a real 1971 Cuda or a Barracuda" ......what is the difference and how can someone distinguish the difference?

Cuda' was the High Performance model of the Barracuda. Cuda vin# starts with "BS" Barracuda vin# starts with "BH". Also Grand Coupe (Fancy/Luxury Barracuda) vin Starts with "BP".

Most obvious external difference is the Cuda has the scooped performance hood while the Barracuda hood is flat.  So it is easy to add the performance Cuda hood to a base Barracuda and make them look the same with a few badge changes.  A "real" BS vin code Cuda is worth significantly more than a base Barracuda.

Barracuda could come with six cylinder engine up to a 340 or 383 4-bbl.  The Cuda came standard with a 383 4-bbl and heavy duty suspension.  Extra heavy duty suspension was standard with the 440 or 426.

For complete list of difference and options, here is the factory data book for the 1970 Barracuda & Cuda:

As to the hood you may be correct for 71's but my 73 Barracuda was ordered with the sport hood and has the option code for it on the fender tag.  Mine is a high option car with PS/PB/AC/Cruise/etc.
