Lever on Steering column
« on: October 07, 2008 - 02:37:55 PM »
There is a small black lever on my steering column down near the dash but I have no idea what it is for. Its attached to one of the covers going around the column and it does not appear to be an electrical switch. Can someone tell what its purpose is, I can take a pic if needed.

The only thing I can think of is the key release.  Does it slide like it is spinning around the column?  A pic would certainly help.

Is your column installed or out of the car?

I have one on mine but it seems to not have much to do.  I think it  was meant to have to do with removing the key and locking the steering column.  I can get my key out without doing anything with it.  And the column still locks.

i've attached a pic of the triangle shaped lever in question. It's between the hose clamp holding down the Tach and near the key switch. The lever moves but doesn't seem to change anything.

:iagree: Like the others have said, looks like the lever that needs to be depressed in order to get the key out.

You don't need to press it to get the key out?  :clueless:

That is the lever to get the key out and someone has went inside your column and took the catch mechanism out. Does the steering wheel lock when the key is out? People take it upon themselves to do what they want to there cars.

The wheel does lock but not very well, you can wiggle it loose. Thanks everyone, guess I won't worry about it.

Um, I would take the wheel and crush can off, then look up under all the turn switches and stuff , just to see what you have. Wiggling the wheel should not unlock your steering. If you have loose screws on the plate, they could fall out from vibration and catch themselves up in your steering. That would not be good
