Steering column connectors
« on: September 16, 2008 - 06:24:53 AM »
I have a Painless generic harness in the car. The Safety inspection busted me for not having an original comumn installed, so it is back in. My question is: What kind of connectors do you use to hook up the ignition and turn signal harnesses? I can do a permanent splice, but would rather have something that can be disconnected for component replacement. I do not have the car-harness ends for these. Thanks

You have to re-use the original connectors by removing the pins, cleaning them up, soldering them onto the new wires, and re-inserting them into the plastic blocks.

Painless uses the GM connectors I believe , you can go to the wreckers & get a set of matched plugs out of virtually anything & solder your wires onto the male & female plugs , just leave 4" to solder to on both sides of the plugs , GM plugs for the ign switch will not work as they plug straight into the ign switch so no male end , the other solution is to use one of the small 7 pin trailer plugs

Thanks Chryco - I hadn't thought enough "out of the box" on this one. Those trailer connectors - or something like that should work just right. I bought the generic harness with no connectors.
