1970 Barracuda code - M48 - What is it?
« on: September 16, 2008 - 12:00:53 AM »
Hey gang,
This one has me scratching my head.

A few years ago I received a broadcast sheet for a 1970 slant six Barracuda with the M48 code on it.

I assumed it was a typo for M46 since it uses the same box on the broadcast sheet.

But today, I received yet another 1970 Barracuda broadcast sheet, 318 car this time, with M48 on it as well. M has to be some kind of moulding, but what?

Both cars are also coded seperately for M21, M26, & M38, so it rules those out of course.

Does anyone know what it could be? I can not find anything on it anywhere.....

If someone has an original window sticker or factory invoice showing a description for M48 on a 1970 Barracuda I would love to see it.

Thanks,
Barry

I thought it was those chrome edge guards on the side lip of the doors. My yellow 70 m46 had them on it.  I am not absolute about numbers though

Hey Barrry,
Over at moparts there's a guy named "Todd440".  He works at the Chrysler Museum.  I'm thinking if you ask him, he might be able to find out from someone there.  He really is a good guy, I'd ask him

Here is a very interesting site, but no M48 listed either.   :dunno:

Does either car have the M46 option? If both cars have the option, then I would say it's a typo. However, there might be an option that is not normally listed in the literature. My library contains no such option codes. The possibilities that come to mind are: bright trim on the wheelwells, rear only; the bright door edge guards, as suggested by Al. Do both cars share any obscure options on the rear of the car, which seem not to be coded on the option sheet or fender tag? It seems weird that two cars would have the same typo, and be so different. Are they both from the same assembly plant? I have heard of other plants building the same cars, and using what amounted to an "internal" coding system. It could also be the result of a worker on a shift doing something he wasn't supposed to, either on purpose, or by accident. Very curious.

Neither car has M46.

Both cars are from Hamtramck.

The scheduled build dates are about a month apart.

On sheet has a printer glitch, where a digit is "missing" after the number 4 in two places. On sheet is coded A46, and the other one could be, but due to the glitch I can not say for certain.

The sheets are from different printers.

Both cars are coded as Y22 executive lease cars.

I did ask on Moparts, one guess so far is the Gran Coupe grille chrome on a Barracuda. It is possible, but nothing conclusive yet........  :clueless:

The door edge mouldings are M05. My 70 B'cuda droptop has them, and I have the buildsheet that calls them out.

My guess is the AAR/Gran Coupe grille mouldings, but I have nothing to back that up.

Only thing I know for sure it is a molding of some kind.  Have not seen it before but sure it could surface.  Were the cars from the same dealer I wonder?  Could have been something special for a dealer.  Or it could have been a type o.  With two of them sounds more like some obscure molding of some sort.  Gordon
