TIP! Easy way to clean your block.
« on: October 19, 2008 - 06:06:33 PM »
I am not sure if everybody is already using or knows about cleaning block very very well.
I used Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) and water. 2-4% of lye is enough to clean all grease and paint. Temperature was 140-170F all the time. I heated it over night in big barrel and next day i washed it with high pressured cold water and used a little bit steelbrush to clean the rest.
Remember to use rubber gloves and face protection.

Note: Camshaft bearings must be changed after this.

Check the results.

My friends block after using the steelbrush.

It`s fun to do this kind of stuff when winter is long here in Finland.  ;D

What did you use for the heater?

Is that an Electric Hot Water heater+ T stat hooked up?

You can use almost anything to heat it, even a campfire under the barrel. Temperature is not so critical just make sure its between 120-190. Cleaning power is not so good when temp is low.

I used electric hot water heater. Power is 2000w. It takes 4-6 hours to take the temp up but then its hot very long time before it uses the heater again.
Any thermostat or so will work. I have heat sensor in little pipe bottom of the barrel and that digital box cuts away power if temperature is getting too high or if its getting cold  it takes the heater on. My friend brought it to me and connected the wires so i am not sure how it really works.

Sweet, maybe I can save some parts off the next water heater I swap out.
