Torsion bar length and size?
« on: October 16, 2008 - 01:48:08 PM »
My car was a 70 318 4spd e body.   It has the stock bars on it now with a 440 and seems to be doing ok :clueless:

I was in my shed today and found some 69 383 road runner torsion bars.  I didn't look for a part #. I just know I took these off a stock RR  and got the 8 3/4 to.

Are they the same length?  Should be bigger to huh?  Not really wanting to do front end work, but I will if I have to.  I don't want to end up with a broken bar

The B body bars were the same length as the e-body's from '62-72, 41". Not sure about the diameter though, I would think it would be larger since the big block b-bodies were heavier than small block e-bodies, but that's no guarantee.

The '69 RR t-bar is thicker than a 1970 E-body 318 bar. In a road test of a car with the 318 bars and the "hot" engine, the road tester thought it resulted in a better car, with more road manners than the Challenger with the R/T suspension, with little penalty in handling. I noticed a comfortable ride in my '67 with the smallblock torsion bars, but was not thrilled with the soft leaf springs in back. If you want a little more compliance from the suspension, and don't mind a little lean in the corners, the 318 bars will be fine. Just a thought, though: radial tires soften the blows in a firm suspension, and can help make a pretty stout handler feel like it has a softer suspension, when it isn't being "worked". Although my suspension includes Super Stock leaf springs, and the biggest MOPAR bars I could get for the A-body, it isn't as harsh as I thought it would be. I think the difference is in the use of radial tires. They're your kidneys, Al; what's your pleasure?

the RR bars shpuld be 778 /779 , which is definatly bigger then the 318 bars , the bars should be marked on the ends . Make sure the odd number to the left side

According to the chassis book, the Road Runner has .90 bars while the 318 Barracuda has .86, so your looking at an increase in spring rate by changing.

Al was it an A/C car? Ive heard from a few people that a 318 with A/C has 383 bars. Lots of guys actually run the small block bars with big blocks for better weight transfer, I havent heard of broken bars but the guys who get really crazy and try /6 bars sometimes run into trouble.

My Satellite is a 273 car, still has it in it but not for long. It rides nice but man does it roll in the turns, alot of that is the 41 year old 4 leaf springs in the back, sits too low in the back but just right in front. I think im going to keep the small block bars for a while.
