Loose Steering
« on: October 17, 2008 - 09:49:34 AM »
Have a 74 E-Body with power steering, new front shocks, new front sway bar bushings, new ball joints. The car tracks very good and straight down the highway and around town but it just seems like there is alot of play in the steering wheel, but maybe all Ebodies are like this. I would like to know if there is a way to 'tighten' it up abit? I know by putting a smaller steering wheel on it would give the impression of a more tighter feel but is there something else I can do or should be looking at?

1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Could just be a lot of slop in the box itself, or in the bushings.  Is the box original?  Pitman arm could be worn.  Have someone sit in the car and wiggle the wheel side to side while you watch the steering shaft where it goes into the steering box.  If you see the shaft rotating more than a 1/4 -1/2 inch or so either way without trying to turn the wheels, you probably need to rebuild your steering box, or need a new pitman arm.

You don't get a lot of "feedback" from the steering wheel on old cars with power steering and it feels un-attached to the front end, like an arcade game.

the wheel alignment on these cars sucks if you set ot factory spec , max the caster , put about 1/2* of negative camber *, set the toe in @ 1/16 " , check the steering box for play , it will steer Far better
