Cheap 5/6 speed??
« on: October 11, 2008 - 10:51:48 AM »
I was reading a post over on moparchat about using a 3.9l bellhousing to mate a supra/tacoma 5 speed to a 360. Has anyone ever did this? Here is a link to the post. http://www.moparchat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86911&page=2&highlight=t-5 Post number 14. I wonder if a x runner 6 speed transmission would work... Just a idea!

I've heard of this before and read a bit on it in other places. Of course in these situations cheap becomes a relative term and you have to decide which commodity are you going to spend; time or money. Sure, maybe you can find one in a yard for a few hundred bucks, but after all the crossbred parts and fabrication you going to be many many hours into making it fit and close to a grand or more in parts. On top of that, they are a pretty large and heavy trans that will require significant mods to the stock uni-body. The alternative is that for a couple grand more you can get a nearly bolt in package that can be accomplished in a weekend and have you back on the road while the Supra transplant is still having the floor board cut.

The same could be said for adapter a late model Ram truck 5 speed to our cars, which already has the bolt on capability.

Although I don't know what the 5/6 speed kits are up to these days, I know that even getting all the parts to convert my auto to a 4 speed, even considering I got a A833 OD for 100 bucks and have bought most of my parts used, is going to end up costing me close to $2k. I would think that if you wanted to do a 5/6 speed trans conversion "on the cheap" it would still cost at least that much, and likely take longer with the custom fabbed parts.

Now that you put it that way I think im going to pass on that idea. What about a mustang t-5? Quicktime makes a bell housing to put one behind a mopar. My motor is pretty mild I don't think I would break a WC unit. If I used a hydraulic clutch wouldn't it be alot easier to install? Isn't the 4 speed hump installed just for the shifter linkage? So if I used a t-5 could I get by with not changing my tunnel or welding that piece for the clutch to pull on(not sure what its called). I think if the shifter is to far forward I could use this mustang plus shifter without a console. It looks pretty mean also! I'm not looking at doing a swap right now im just brain storming while I save money.

(I'm not that knowledgeable on manual transmission FYI :-) ).

Remote shifter? Looks  :eek4: to me. The holes are just for the linkage on the A833, and the tunnel is just to cover the holes & linkage, but you're assuming you won't have to cut the floor for the T5. I don't know much about T5's, but it still may not fit, with linkage, into the original auto tunnel...And you'll still have to go with conversion parts for the bell and clutch. Then work out the linkage (man there's more than I thought there was), do the custom driveshaft thing, work out a transmission mount, and deal with the shifter being in a weird spot. Plus, if anything breaks, you can't just buy the stuff, you'll have to make it up again.

I like to do stuff myself, so I get that part of it. Unfortunately, the more I do custom work myself the more I realize that its always easier to use something designed to do what its doing, and often not significantly more expensive. For example, the A833OD conversion I'm doing for my challenger. Its no different on the outside than an A833, so really there's no custom work at all, just finding parts. I could go on Brewer's and buy a complete 4 speed conversion for $3,550. I assume that would get me a rebuilt transmission, and at least reconditioned parts. As I mentioned before, I've spent about 1300 bucks so far, with at least a few hundred to go. Lets call that close to 2k. True, I've saved about 1500 bucks, but my transmission isn't rebuilt, and while some of my parts are new, some aren't even reconditioned. Granted I can't find anything wrong with them at the moment (I wouldn't have bought them otherwise,I'm pretty sure everything will work just fine), but my savings will go away pretty quick if I have to start rebuilding stuff. And of course if I started adding up hours I spent looking for all the parts, and gas picking things up, etc., I'm sure the savings would get pretty marginal.

I do get to say I did it myself though, and hopefully pretty soon I can tell everyone just how much less than 2k it cost me. But it still would have been easier, faster, and quite possibly resulted in a more reliable product had I just spent little more money. Hopefully this isn't too discouraging, after all, I didn't listen to my own advice, but I figured I should mention my experiences. Plus, if you end up selling the car, the transmission may end up costing you even more money since it isn't stock, and doesn't have a nice company name to attach to it...

Cool shifter and actually very easy to build.  The issue is the torsion bar cross member / floor pan support and how the transmission and shifter are in relation to it.  After seeing that shifter, you may be able to make anything work!  Measure ....measure.....and measure again.

The Mustangs are having no problems removing the 2nd gear from the T5 , I doubt it would be a worthwhile swap ultimatly

Why not just get a 5 speed from a dodge 6 or 5.2 RWD pickup?  They go for $69 at our pick and pull. You'll have to use the hydraulic throwout setup and use a shifter that comes out of the top of the tunnel. Gunslinger can probably sell you a handle that moves it a little to the driver's side. Just use a console with a custom cover, centered around the shifter. You probably won't have to add the hump either.

I wonder if in about a year when the new 6 speed challenger start showing up in the wrecking yards or ebay or dodge gets it head out of its *&%^&*&%^* if they will be reasonable in price.  :dunno:
