Need help with order
« on: August 29, 2010 - 08:24:55 PM »
My current spot in my project is the car has the high build on it. So my questios are...
1. Do I block sand then pull the doors, deck lid and hood and paint the jams or pull all that stuff jam it and the engine bay then put it back together then block it.
2. Or do I wait to do all that after putting sealer on?
3. Not related to order of things but do you use clear coat on the underside of the deck lid and hood or even the engine bay for that matter?
4. How do you paint the hood springs so the paint doesn't come off when you open the hood and the springs strech?
There are probly a hundred more body work questions I have but I am beat from spraying today so........
Thanks in advance.

where are all pro painters when you need em...  :dunno:

if you paint the insides first ,you will have a lot of masking to do if you sand through primer and have to reshoot. I you block first, be carefull not to scratch anything.  I took the middle road. Primed and blocked up to 240 grit ,took out the bodyparts and painted insides, put it back together and blocked.
If you use metallic paint, you use clear to get shine. If you don`t use metallic you could go with no clear, but it will look different.
I made a couple bars for inside the springs, about a half inch longer than the spring in rest. don`t have pics, sorry...  I used a flat bar appr. 1"x 1/4  and cut out a V on both ends. Then twisted the bar a 1/4 turn and put it inside the spring. hope this helps

One trick I heard about on painting under areas like inside the fenders is to mix the Base coast and clear together and spray just those areas like that. % of each, I don't know.

I'm not a pro painter so hopefully someone who is can confirm if this is a credible idea or not.

Thanks Dutch for the info. I guess it can be done each way first. So I guess I just gotta pick one.  I also get what you mean about the springs. I can do that.

Sinner, I am sticking with the original color B5. I am just that lucky that the first car I'm gonna paint is metallic. :cooldancing:

Topcat, I souldn't know where to begin with that. However I am lucky (I think) that the original paint and undercoating is still good on the inside of the fenders but I do need to paint the whole front support which I think is supposed to be B5 also. It was always undercoated so I don't know for sure. I think that the radiator support is flat black? Or what was that orgnasol sp?

Radiator front frame is blacked out. Alaska T/A has a spec sheet I recall.

Paint all your edges first with a small detail gun. Wait a while before main body paint work.

Then get this to prevent overspray going inside behind doors and trunk etc. making an unsightly look when you go to paint the main body.
