1. A higher stall than normal
2. Dropping the pan and finding metal in it
3. The fluid being black on the dip stick
4. If it is a track car, your E.T. slowing down, your 60 ft. times getting worse and your "Trap R.P.M." at the end of the track being higher than normal.

OK, so when the trans doesn't react when the car is cold it's the transmission itself?

It sounds like normal "converter drain down" Start it in neutral and see how it does. (they don't fill the converter in park unless you you have an aftermarket manual spool valve in the valve body, that's why you have to check the fluid level in neutral)

Did you check fluid level yet?  Colder temps, fluid contracts, goes low, tranny slow to respond - my wife's old car did it all the time (in the winter.)
