489 rebuild.
« on: October 21, 2008 - 09:08:51 PM »
I have a 3.55 489 sure grip under my 70 Challenger, how do I find out if it is a cone or clutch slippery as it is still in the car?it doesnt have any undue drive noises just a bit of back lash, due to no one in Australia that I can find that has rebuild parts I would like to order the right parts from the US first go and who would be a reputable company to order from?

489 most of the time is cone unless updated. If you have stock axles, pull one and shine a light down the tube. A clutch type has a pin with a flat spacer on it to take up axle end play. The cone will just be a flat piece all you can see (shiney) if you see 2 little round circles one on each side, it should be a clutch type. Not mentioning aftermarket stuff. But the best way is to pull and do a visual inspection

Thanks Moparel,I remember when I greased the bearings I did shine a lite down the tube and noticed a bright like disc in the center so might be a cone type, its just if I make a wrong order the car is off the road for some time till more parts come from the US,unlike you blokes we cant just dive down to the local shop and buy what we need we have to order due to the rarety of 8 3/4s no one has stock down here which is a real bummer.

if the piece you saw inside the diff is shiny & almost the diameter of the axle it is cone type , if the disc is under 3/4" it is clutch , the buttons used in the clutch type are much smaller then the axle diameter
