Pivot Shaft ?
« on: November 04, 2008 - 06:05:41 PM »
Can anyone tell me how to tighten the pivot shafts, as I do it the shaft turns in the lower control arm. Also do most of the susp parts use washers, such as lower control arms, strut rods, etc. As I stated in my newb intro, this car was dissasembled and nothing was labled but I do not have any washers in the box of susp bolts. Thanks

the nut behind the control arm has a washer on the nut so no , if you cannot tighten the rear you need to clamp onto it with vice grips or a torsion bar clamp to tighten it up

Wow, thats a loose bushing to turn free like that. I had to press my pivot into the bushing and arm. then the torsion bars were hooked up and into the propper slots. I then used an air gun and zapped them down. The rod didn't spin, nor the pivot

I dont know if it matters but these are poly lower control arm bushings. There does look like there is two flat edges on the pivot shafts where they meet the k frame do I hold them there or did I do something wrong.

I just noticed that the stock ones do not have the flat sides, the ones being put in are from just susp. I know there has been alot of talk about poly lower control arm bushings, should they turn in the arm when trying to tighten the pivot shafts, because the shaft itself seems tight in the bushing.

You say that there are flats on the new shafts. This means that you are to hold that end with a wrench, while tightening down the nut on the front of the support shaft. After you do this, then you assemble the rest of the control arm onto the shaft, where it is already mounted to the car. Do not forget to grease the bushings, or you will never get rid of the mice that come to live in your suspension.

I can't get a wrench in between the lower control arm and the k frame to hold onto the pivot shaft. I will go out and give it another try. The whole thing is out of the car right now, I'm assembling this on a bench. Thanks for helping everyone.

You have to tighten the shaft in the K-frame before you assemble the arm onto it. Then press the arm onto the shaft (poly bushings should allow for this), and then install the torsion bar.

Supercuda, you are my hero and I'm an idiot, went out and took your advice and it was so simple, I guess sometimes you sit and stare at things to long that you miss the obvious. Thank you and be prepared to have to dig me out again.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. My years of experience should count for something. Glad I could help. Digging people out of little holes like yours is what I do, so no sweat.

There should be room between the LCA and the K-frame to get a vise grips or channel locks in there.
