I used a 50k BTU kerosene jet heater for years before I built my garage with a Modine gas unit and it worked great. You can even buy a thermostat that you plug the heater into that regulates the heat automatically if you want to fire it up before work starts and go have a coffee.

there ok but there noisy and sometimes smoke a little when fired up the ventless propane wall mount heaters work real good but your area might be to big for one of them.

I have several friends that have the heaters that burn used oil. It will burn just about anything. Motor oil, vegetable oil ect. The initial cost may be high, but once installed you can virtually run it for free as long as you know folks that have used motor oil ect!! Too bad they haven't been approved for home useage yet. At least not here in Virginia. :2thumbs:

I got a 3 brick propane heater in my shop 40x30

This heater I use came out of my other house. It is made for indoors, wall hanging and doesnt require a vent. It is made to run vent free. I have enough little air holes around my shop that if vents were required for my unit, it could still get some air. I won't run it if painting is going on.

I have used them in the past also, be carefull if you are going to paint anything, first there is an open flame, and second, I have gotten some bad results because I think there was some airborne oil that contaminated the parts I painted.

I used one of those, it was inexpensive and put out a decent amount of heat. Problem was the CO level would really go up in the garage and I would get a bad headache if I worked in there too long. I ended up putting in a Mr Heater ceiling mount unit unit from Northern Tool. Now thats the way to go - really fast heat up, without the funes.

I've been using a Reddy 50,000 btu propane heater the last month or so and it works well.  It will heat a double garage up pretty quickly.  You won't want to leave it on continuously and I don't leave it unattended.  I have had no problems with CO and there is no ventilation. I'm sure the CO level must have risen but not enough to cause problems when running it for 15 minutes or so.

If You get worried about CO then pick up a battery powered CO detector for 20 bucks and toss it in the garage.  Propane burns pretty clean and you could crack a door or window for some make-up air.

I have a tube style propane heater in my shop (23x32).The tube runs full lenth of the shop and vents outside. It will use propane in a hurry if left on all winter but it can heat my shop up overnite enough to work on my sleds (even in -40to -50c)  :faint:
