Porting
« on: July 25, 2008 - 07:30:18 AM »
Drag Racers I need your help. This is a subject I know nothing about. Please educate me. What is the difference between Alcohol Ports and gasoline ports????? I know for a fact that there is a difference because when MoPar released the Sprint Car W-9&W-8 small block race heads they offered em in alcohol and gas. Is the chamber the only difference? or is the intake ports or exhaust ports?? Another things are the Stage V Hemi Heads in Alcohol and gas. Whats the difference in porting? Can you use a port, intake or exhaust, that was desigend for alcohol and use it with gasoline? Thanks much for any help or feedback on this , I am going to purchase a new set of either Eds RPM 440's, possibly Indy 440EZ A-Body 440 heads, or maybe the excellent 440source Stealth heads, but I have always had excellent results with Eds products.   Eddie

no difference that I am aware of in the porting other than you need approx 40% more fuel volume with alcohol, the compression always needs to be much higher with alcohol as well around 13:1

I see, so the difference in 'Alcohol Heads" are only the combustion chambers right? Probably very shallow? and easy to build compression with, very small chambers ect..?? Since I am using primarily street heads, I guess I should shoot for as much Comp as I can. This will probably figure in to my camshaft selection as well. CCC!!!Thanks Chryco.

Not sure, but I think it has to do with the exhaust seat material. The Alcohol versions IIRC use Berylium seats, that take very special safety precautions when being machined. I forget which ones had them. Call Ryan at Shady Dell Speed Shop in PA. Google it for the contact info...
