whats wrong with my 727?
« on: November 02, 2008 - 10:38:04 PM »
Hi I got a 727 behind my 440 and I have been having problems with it. trans doesn't seem to move correctly with shifter.when I find reverse it seems to be binding and requires me gassing it to get car to back up. then I noticed that I have a dripping leak at the bottom front of the belhousing. I am a little upset with this leaking and not moving to well. was wanting to use as a driver without having to pull the trans. you folks know Lets put it together ande go for a ride! any ideas? I have another mystery trans but I have been thinking about pulling this one and sending it to  be rebuilt. nothing like a fresh tranny! thanks for the rant. Great website Stephen

If you check your fluid level, while running and shifter is in neutral, and it shows full, then it is time to pull it and send it off or rebuild it yourself. While you are down there, throw in your mystery trans and see how that works. If your trans will only take a day to rebuild, then wait to put it back in.

Hey Shelbydogg thanks for the reply. yea I wish my tranny shop only took a day it might be 2 weeks, but they do good work and advise of extra parts as needed. I had the fluid full in neutral. I  had a 440 74 gtx that lose reverse (just wouldn't move) a few years ago and took that transmission apart. replaced seals, bands and steels and clutches. was supprised when it worked upon install. one of those amazing shade tree repairs!!!Have a great day all! That's how I learned to rebuild 904s, then 727s. I bought a 72 Challenger around 1984 and it didn't have reverse or 3rd gear.  I pulled it apart and found the piston seals in the direct drum cracked and broken. I replaced everything that was in the kit that I could, except for some bushungs that needed special tools, reinstalled it. Then was also surprised when it worked as good as new.

Sounds like you are able to repair it yourself.

Just wondering here if that dripping leak at the front of your bell housing may be the rear main seal on the crank.  :dunno:
