Clockspring '01 Sebring a Breeze
« on: November 13, 2008 - 07:08:34 AM »
Replaced the closckspring on our '02 Sebring vert last night & it was pretty straight forward. Symptoms were no horn or cruise control & the airbag light stayed on indicating it was non-functional.  We had paid a local shop a couple of hundred a few years ago for the same job on a minivan so after finding some advice on the WWW I ordered the part for $85, had to buy a steering wheel puller $15. The only issue was wiring the cruise control pods as the two sides are identical with nothing indicating which goes where....1st try I lost the 50/50 battle but other than having to fight the little plugs back out all was a breeze, took about an hour.

Hmmm...I need to do that to my truck.  I guess I should pull the cover off and take a look.

I gotta do the Clockspring on my wife's Focus this weekend - symptom is signals won't auto-cancel.  Tab on the spring is broken.  I have a new multifunction switch too, just in case that's it.

Clock spring, very common problem on Chrysler vehicles. :grinyes: It's nice to get your horn and cruise back, isn't it.

Yea search the Internet & you'd think every Chrysler ever built must be doomed to fail... but not limited to just to those as many brands have issues,  you can get lower cost replacements for some just not a 01 Sebring which is a dealer only item.

don't know about Fords but the turn signal is a separate issue on Chryslers but I was right there at the switches which would have required all this to come off just the same.

If it's no worse than mine I say get er done, if your sure that's your problem get the part 1st, my local dealer didn't have so I ordered from www.mopar-wholesale.com for about 1/3 less.

Oh, it's the clock spring.  I took it to one of the local Ford dealers that I've had previous experience with and has always done right by me and they said that's what it was.  They wanted about $500 to fix it.  I figured - it's a truck, I'm a commercial driver, I always wear my seatbelt...who needs airbags?  It didn't occur to me that the clock spring was the cause of the missing cruise and horn but that they didn't reconnect them when they did the diagnosis.  I drive my truck very little and we don't have annual vehicle inspections, so there hasn't been much pressure for me to get into the steering wheel and mess around with the airbag. Guess I oughta get in there and get er done:working:

Thanks, Wade.  I'll look into it soon.  Probably not this weekend - I've had to put off building my short block for far too long.

Congrats on post #5000.  :2thumbs:
