4 Speed trans linkage setup
« on: April 14, 2004 - 11:57:35 PM »
Have a 73 340 cuda with 4 speed, hurst shifter....problem I've got .....2  sets of linkage but there's apparently no ID #'s  on these? Not quite sure which is correct set. One set is a 'fabricated' tube setup with what appears as 1-2 being quite straight but the reverse rod doesn't fit the shifter hole in linkage. The other set I've yet to try but the reverse has a big 'dog leg'  in it coming back toward the shifter and appears to have a smaller boss that should fit shift body lever. If somebody's got a pic  of the ass'y that would help. Also whats the easy way to set the rod lengths...I  think you do it when alls in neutral  but the shop manual I  have is not to clear......thx if anyone can help.

the TUbe style are the heavy duty competetion rods , the 1-2 lever doglegs out from the tranny & the shift rod goes in from behind the lever , the longer 3-4 rod goes in opposite pointing inward towards the tranny , the rods should be adjusted in neutral & in the center of the throw 7 aligned so the shifter will go smoothly side to side from reverse to 3-4 gate , the reverse rod hangs under the tranny crossmember also all the levers on the tranny should point up unless it is an OD where the 3-4 lever should point down

thx for the info on linkage......someone before me had the wrong likage for 1-2 on the case....swapped on all three from my 'spare' ....used the non-tube  rods and alls fine ........thx  again.

On another topic.....my rear seal on tailstock to yoke  has a hole in it ....?? how does it come out/off  and how do you put on new since it appears  the spline comes close to the seal....do you need a speacial tool??

Use a medium sized flat-head to carefully pry it out (the trans is aluminum, don't want to screw up the area where it sits)... prying it out is easiest when the trans is out of the car... ::)

the tail housing on the 4 spd is cast not alum but still be careful removing it , I use a screwdriver or chisle to raise the lip from there you should be able to tap or pry it out , installing the new one requires a tube or socket to sit on the steel rim of the seal & drive it in square , make sure the drain hole in the dust boots is pointed down when installing the seal

OK  so if I  understand this right......this 'dust boot' which is approx1.5" long comes off then the seal  is behind this?......if so how does that boot come off.....thx......

Thanks CP for correcting me... wasn't sure if the 833 was similar in the type of material to the 904 or 727 at all... ;)
